SMTP settings for the most popular email providers

1714

Every email provider will have different SMTP settings. Whether your provider is Yahoo, BT, Microsoft office 365 or any other hosting company, they all have their own smtp settings. In fact their own POP (post office protocol) settings as well as other requirements for configuring email.

why do i need SMTP settings?

There are two main reasons why you would need SMTP settings:

  1. You want to set up a desktop email client for sending and receiving email. This is the most common reason for needing SMTP settings
  2. Another reason you may need SMTP settings is if you want to configure a device, such as a printer, specifically for sending email via your email provider.

What is the difference between webmail and desktop mail client?

So lets stick with the assumption that you want to configure your email account on your desktop client. The difference between webmail and a desktop client is that the client will be installed on your local computer, and therefor (normally) the emails that are sent and received will also be stored on the local computer. This is not the case when using webmail. When all email is stored on the clients servers and you are only viewing it from their servers, via your Internet browser.

When you are using webmail, the email provider takes care of all the settings for you – including SMTP settings. However when you are using a desktop client you need to configure that client to be able to send and receive email via the email provider’s servers. One of those settings is the SMTP settings.

SMTP Settings

Just a very small piece of background information about SMTP settings. SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. It is the most widely used protocol for sending email. To put it in basic terms it is the method used by computers to send email and by email servers for receiving email. So when you input SMTP settings into your desktop email program what you are actually doing is telling your computer how to send email. This includes the following:

  • The address of the server that will relay your email (Your email providers email server in other words)
  • The security credentials your computer must provide to that email server to tell the server who it is
  • The port that your computer should use for the communication
